Nurturing a Culture of Possibility and Wellness
"When can I move in? That's what visitors from around the world ask when I speak about how The Redwoods' one-of-a-kind-culture encourages residents to live, learn and grow in a variety of ways. There's something different in the atmosphere here. Residents feel welcomed and valued.
For nearly 40 years, we have purposely done things differentlyessentially breaking the mold for retirement communitiesbecause we believe it makes for a better quality of life for all of our residents. For example, The Redwoods provides housing and health care services on a month-to-month rental basis without life care contracts. And, residents can enter at any level of living, from Independent Living apartments to round-the-clock skilled nursing in our Health Care Center.
We are committed to affordability and work to keep rents low by prudent budgeting, controlling our costs, and by providing rent subsidies. Since rental income covers just 80 percent of our costs, we work closely with our volunteers to raise funds through an annual campaign and fun events such as our annual CrabFest.
Still another thing that sets us apart is that we welcome seniors of all income levels, including those on government assistance. Sixty of our 149 Independent Living residents receive HUD Section 8 subsidies. The Redwoods offers MediCal beds in the Health Care Center. The Redwoods subsidizes additional residents through our own endowment fund so that no one will have to leave The Redwoods due to lack of funds.
Helping to keep The Redwoods' mission flourishing is a dedicated Board of Directors with an incredible depth, breadth and variety of expertise. All live locally and are genuinely committed to our mission and vision and to our residents and staff.
Building on our rich history, our Board recently embarked on a plan to modernize and green our campus through a broad range of additions and improvements. These include modernizing our kitchen and adding more dining options, building a Wellness Center with a comprehensive program schedule, updating the Independent Living apartments and building additional affordable apartments. We've named the project Revitalizing The Redwoods and are excited about the changes it will bring. You can read more about the project's details in News and Updates.
Once again, we are stepping out to do things differently as we nurture a culture of possibility and wellness for seniors now and in the future.
